Introduction
Alexander Williams RHA (1846-1930)
was a marine and landscape painter most closely
associated during his lifetime with Achill Island,
although he painted throughout Ireland. His solo
exhibitions in Dublin became annual social events
drawing crowds of a thousand and more. He was
besides being a painter, a noted ornithologist and a
singer.

He left some 35 volumes of memoirs, diaries -
including a day-to-day diary of life on Achill -
exhibition books & sketchbooks, catalogues,
innumerable letters and other memorabilia. The
collection, on which this full length biography is based,
is believed to be largest of its kind ever left by an Irish
painter.
