Kildownet Castle, Achill Sound, from an
exhibition catalogue entitled 'Something
about Achill', 1897.
Above: Oil 'Toilers of the Sea' exhibited at the
RHA, 1902. The large fish on the shore are
probably tope, a small type of shark.
Left: Menaun Cliffs, Achill Island, showing the
cathedral rocks, since much altered by storms.
Watercolour over pencil from the sketchbook
preserved from the artist's first visit to the

island, 1873.
Alexander Williams first visited
Achill Island in 1873. He wrote back
to his father to say: 'I had found a part
of Ireland where there was an immense
field for the activities of an artist, and
that I intended to make it peculiarly my
own, and devote myself to makings its
wonderful scenery known.' He became
more closely associated with the
scenery of Achill than any other
painter of his time.
